Keyfile Installation Guide

To ‘unlock’ the software and allow for live training, a valid enabling keyfile must be installed. Keyfiles are small files created by EEGer that represent a user’s software license. They tell the computer which games and features are okay to use and when the license requires renewal. Whenever there is a change to a license, such as a new game being purchased, a new keyfile will be created and sent to the user for installation.

To install a keyfile, follow the instructions below:

How to Install a Keyfile on Recent EEGer Versions (EEGer4 440t+)

Recent versions of EEGer will periodically check for new keyfiles and automatically install them. This helps ensure that a system stays up-to-date and streamline the process of receiving updates by removing the need to manually download and install files. The process runs in the background and should not interrupt how the software is used.

To allow EEGer to automatically download and install keyfiles, the following requirements must be met:

  1. A compatible EEGer version is installed on the computer (EEGer4 440t or Later).

  2. The EEGer Security Dongle is connected to the computer prior to EEGer being opened.

  3. The computer has a stable internet connection.

If there is a problem during this process (such as the dongle not being connected), a new keyfile will not be installed. If the user is expecting an updated Keyfile from EEGer, the software can be commanded to check again by navigating to Files>Get Keyfiles from the top toolbar of EEGer’s main screen. EEGer will report if it successfully found a new keyfile or if further issues were encountered.

How to Manually Install a Keyfile

In situations where the computer is unable to connect to the internet, keyfiles can be manually installed. This is also required on older versions of the software which do not automatically check for keyfiles. To complete this process, follow the steps below:

  1. Download the latest keyfile sent from EEGer. Keyfiles are typically sent via email.

  2. Once downloaded, locate and double-click the file to install it. A confirmation message will appear if the keyfile was installed successfully.

  3. Close and reopen EEGer. This will allow the system to update and apply the keyfile changes.

If the installation was not successful, try installing the keyfile from within EEGer:

  1. Open EEGer and navigate to Files>Read EEGer keyblock files (.EKB) from the top toolbar of EEGer's main screen.

  2. A File Explorer window will appear - navigate to where the keyfile is saved, select the keyfile, then click Open.

  3. A confirmation message should appear confirming that the installation was successful.

If the message How do you want to open this file? appears, the keyfile was either not downloaded correctly or the file that was downloaded is not a keyfile. This message will also appear if the keyfile was downloaded onto a computer that does not have EEGer installed. Try redownloading the keyfile.

If the keyfile cannot be accessed from the EEGer computer in order to be downloaded, it can be transferred to the EEGer system using an external storage device such as a USB flash drive or external hard drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

I did not have my dongle connected when I opened the software for the first time, what do I do?

If no dongle is connected when EEGer is run for the first time, the software will not be able to install the keyfile. To have EEGer search for the keyfile again, follow these steps:

  1. Close EEGer if it is open.

  2. Ensure that the EEGer Security Dongle is connected to the computer.

  3. Reopen EEGer and navigate to Files>Get Keyfiles. This will allow EEGer to search for the matching keyfile.

EEGer reports that the latest keyfile is already installed or that no keyfile was found, what do I do?

If you are expecting a new keyfile, such as to extend a renewal date or enable a game, the file may not be ready yet. Please wait until you receive an email from EEGer notifying you that the file is available to check again. We will send you a notification with installation instructions as soon as the file has been uploaded.

If you have recently updated to a new version of the software, our team may not know that you’ve upgraded! Please contact us to let us know that you’ve updated and we’ll make sure your latest keyfile is available on the EEGer Cloud, and that you receive new keyfiles this way in the future. When contacting us, please provide your name, dongle number, and the version of EEGer you’ve updated to.

If you believe there is a technical issue that’s preventing a keyfile from being installed, please contact us for assistance.

How long does it take for a new keyfile to become available?

If you are expecting a new keyfile, it can take time for the file to be created and processed. Please allow for the standard 1-2 business days for the keyfile to be available. We will notify you by email when the keyfile is ready to install.

Once a keyfile has been uploaded by our team, it should be immediately available to download onto your EEGer system.

How do I install a keyfile onto a Home Use system?

The process for installing a keyfile is identical for both Clinical and Home Use systems. If you encounter problems installing a keyfile, please contact your supervising clinician or EEGer support for further assistance.

How do I download a keyfile if my EEGer computer is not connected to the internet?

If the keyfile cannot be accessed from the EEGer computer, it can be transferred to the EEGer system using an external storage device such as a USB flash drive or external hard drive. Download the file onto an internet-connected device in order to transfer the file to the EEGer system.

EEGer is reporting ‘Error Code 1.0’ when trying to install a keyfile?

This message indicates that the internet connection may be unstable, or that the EEGer Cloud is temporarily unavailable. Try reconnecting to the internet and installing the keyfile again. If the message reports that the ‘channel is closed’, wait 20-30 minutes and then try again. Contact EEG Store if issues persist.

How can I tell that a new keyfile has been installed?

EEGer keeps a log of all keyfiles that have been installed onto the computer. This includes listing what features are enabled, when the latest keyfile was created, and when the current keyfile is set to renew. To access this log, navigate to Info>Keyfile Information from the top toolbar of EEGer’s main display. At the top of the window that appears, information about the currently installed keyfile will be displayed. At the bottom of the window, a log of all keyfiles will be reported along with the date that the files were installed.

I Installed a new keyfile, but it didn’t update my system?

First, close and reopen EEGer and verify that the installation was not successful. If issues persist, try installing the keyfile again, checking for any errors or warnings that EEGer reports. When you have confirmed that there is an issue, contact EEGer Support for help with further troubleshooting.
