How to Move EEGer Client Files to a New Computer

Installing EEGer Onto the New Computer

To begin the transfer process, EEGer must be installed onto the new computer. Complete the steps outlined in the EEGer QuickStart Guide to complete the installation process and prepare the computer for use with EEGer.

Copying Files from Existing EEGer Installation

After EEGer has been installed onto the new computer, existing EEGer files need to be moved from the old computer. The first part of this process is to copy the files to an external storage device or an online file hosting service.

This process can take some time to complete depending on the number of existing client files. It may be necessary to perform multiple ‘trips’ until all client files are copied to the new computer.

  1. On the old computer, open the Windows File Explorer by pressing Win+E on the keyboard or navigating from the Start menu.
  2. Navigate to the computer’s C: drive and locate the EEGer folder.
  3. Open the EEGer folder and locate the CLIENTS subfolder. By default, this is where all EEGer client files are stored.
  4. Right-click on the CLIENTS subfolder and select Copy from the context menu. The contents of this folder are now copied to the clipboard and can be transferred to another location on the computer, such as an external storage device.
Note: When uploading files to an online file hosting service, it may be necessary to zip or compress the files to reduce their size for uploading. The files may also need to be selected from within the file hosting service rather than copied to the clipboard.

Moving EEGer Files to External Storage Device

  1. Connect an external storage device to the computer. Choosing a large external hard drive or flash drive will help ensure that sufficient space is available for the EEGer files to be copied to.
  2. Navigate to the external storage device in the Windows File Explorer and open it.
  3. Right-click a blank space within the directory and select Paste from the context menu.
  4. If existing EEGer files are present on the external storage device, such as from a previous backup, a prompt may appear asking to replace existing files. This will refer to demonstration data and duplicate files. It is okay to choose either Ignore or Replace at this stage.
  5. Once the transfer is complete, the files are ready to move to the new computer! Disconnect or eject the external storage device and move it to the new computer.

Transfer EEGer Files to New Computer

  2. On the new computer, open the Windows File Explorer by pressing Win+E on the keyboard or navigating from the Start menu.
  3. Navigate to the external storage device and locate the copied EEGer files. These files will now need to be moved/copied onto the computer.
  4. Right-click on the CLIENTS folder and select Copy from the context menu. The contents of this folder are now copied to the clipboard and can be transferred onto the new computer.
  5. Navigate to the computer’s C: drive.
  6. Right-click the EEGer folder and select Paste from the context menu. This will begin copying existing client files to the new version of EEGer.
  7. Windows will display a prompt about asking to replace existing files. This refers to the demonstration data. It is okay to choose Ignore or Replace at this stage.
  8. Once the transfer has completed, open EEGer.
  9. Navigate to Client>Rebuild Client Index from the top toolbar of EEGer's main screen. This should allow EEGer to rescan the CLIENTS folder and note the newly transferred files.
  10. To ensure this transfer was successful, press the Select Client button - the list of Client IDs should now reflect any previously created or installed clients, in addition to the demonstration clients.

Moving Other EEGer Files to a New Computer

Depending on the reason for moving EEGer to a new computer, EEG Store may recommend copying all of (or parts of) the Preferences and Games subfolders. The process for doing this is identical to copying the CLIENTS subfolder, instead selecting the Preferences or Games folders.

The Preferences folder stores things like custom session plans, some configuration options, and aspects of EEGer like custom wallpapers. The Games subfolder contains information on custom games or tells EEGer where to locate additional games that have been installed onto the computer.

For most reinstalls, it is not recommended to copy these subfolders unless directed by EEG Store. Please note that when upgrading, copying over these extra folders may 'undo' the benefits of upgrading, or cause the software to not function.

It is highly encouraged to contact EEG Store to schedule a support appointment if transferring custom games from an old computer to a new computer. While it is possible to reconfigure games manually or from memory, it can be a time-consuming process. Shortcuts are possible to make this take less time, which our staff can help with!

Frequently Asked Questions

Client Files Do Not Appear Within EEGer Once Copied Over

  1. Ensure that the CLIENTS subfolder was copied from the old computer to the new computer, and not the other way around.
  2. Ensure that the CLIENTS subfolder was not mistakenly copied directly into the C: drive - instead, it should be a subfolder located at C:/EEGer/CLIENTS.
  3. Ensure that the CLIENTS subfolder was not mistakenly nested within the existing CLIENTS folder found at C:/EEGer/CLIENTS/CLIENTS.
  4. Navigate to Client>Rebuild Client Index from the top toolbar of EEGer's main screen. This should allow EEGer to rescan the CLIENTS folder and note the newly transferred files.

Clients Stored on Network Drive No Longer Visible

  1. Navigate to the EEGer/Preference/Settings subfolder on the old computer and locate the paths.nin file - copy this to C:/EEGer/Preferences/Settings of the new computer and restart the software.
  2. Instead of the above step, it is also possible to manually reenter the directory. Navigate to Options>EEGer Configuration Options>Data Locations to do this - please note that any network drive must be locally assigned a drive letter for EEGer to recognize it as a valid path.
